How to Tell if Your Olive Oil is Fake

One of the risks shoppers take when searching for olive oil is buying an imposter olive oil. It’s more than an inconvenience to buy an essential oil that you thought was going to serve an enormous purpose, only to find out that it was an imposter. Luckily, there are certain ways you can tell if an olive oil is fake. 

Take a look at some of the signs of fake olive oil below:

  • You Can’t Find the Source of Your Olive Oil:


One tell-tale sign of fake olive oil is not being able to tell which farm the oil came from. Don’t be fooled if you see a country of origin, try to look for a particular farm so you can do your research on the farm itself. Most farms that cultivate olive oil would benefit from having their name and label on the bottle so customers can rely on their brand. The next time you purchase a bottle of olive oil, try to look for the name of a farm. If you can’t find it you have to ask why that farm wouldn’t want to advertise their business on their product. It’s likely that it could be an imposter!

  • Pay Close Attention to How the Oil is Bottled:

One of the easiest ways to tell if an olive oil is fake is if it’s bottled in a clear glass. It’s best to stick to purchasing olive oils that come in a dark colored glass bottle. The danger of purchasing an olive oil that’s sitting in a clear container is the fact that it’s been exposed to countless UV rays which can hamper the effectiveness of the oil. Your olive oil shouldn’t be exposed to a high level of light, nor should it be warm at all. If you notice any of these occurrences in the olive oil that you purchase, it may not be the best bottle to go with.

  • Look for a both a Batch Date and an Expiration Date:

If you’re looking for both the batch date and the expiration date of your olive oil, be sure you can find both. If you can only find an expiration date, you run the risk of purchasing a bottle of oil that’s more than a year old. Clearly the downside to purchasing an olive oil that’s been bottled months prior to the date that appears on the bottle is that the olive oil won’t be as fresh as it should be. You want an olive oil that’s fresh so you can reap all of it’s nutrition benefits.

  • “Too Good to Be True” Pricing:

If you happen to pick up a bottle of olive oil and notice the price is significantly lower than your average price of olive oil, there’s likely a reason for that. If the bottle of olive oil you’re looking at is particularly cheap, it’s more than likely that it isn’t authentic olive oil.
